We are Georgie & Laura, the original Little Buds

We’re on a mission to make the flower industry better, one bunch at a time

We started LITTLE BUD as a way to send convenient flowers with a personal touch. With our backgrounds in sustainability and international development, we were curious to know where our flowers came from and who grew them. We found out all is not as rosy as it seems. This has led us on a journey to use only the most sustainable flowers. As we grow, we’re making our whole supply chain fair for both people and planet.

Let us tell you more about how we do this and why…

THE STORY OF YOUR BUNCH

Growers

We source seasonal flowers from our British growers and supplement these with Fair Trade when there’s less growing in their fields. In doing so we minimise  the environmental and human impact caused by most flowers sold in the UK

We source seasonal flowers from our British growers and supplement these with Fair Trade when there’s less growing in their fields. In doing so we minimise  the environmental and human impact caused by most flowers sold in the UK. 90% of flowers sold in the UK are imported. Of those, 80% come from the Netherlands. The carbon footprint of Dutch flowers is 5 times that of Kenyan imports (where our Fair Trade flowers are from). The harm caused by the use of pesticides, herbicides, greenhouses, heating and cooling during transit, and draining of water tables to grow in arid conditions is matched by the poor working conditions of farm workers, often paid less than a living wage

Design

We keep it simple to reduce waste. Every week we use a new mix of 3 types of stem. We arrange them in a simple and natural way. By offering one style of bunch a week rather than a mass selection, we put more flowers in vases and less in the bin

By offering one style of bunch a week rather than a mass selection, we put more flowers in vases and less in the bin. Many florists buy an abundance of flowers to stock a large range. 40% of these stems remain unsold and wasted. We wouldn’t tolerate this with our food, so we shouldn’t with our flowers.

Assembly

We keep packaging minimal and green. Our materials are recycled and recyclable (or compostable). We don’t spend extra time and trees putting more in the box…

We keep packaging minimal and green. Our materials are recycled and recyclable (or compostable). We don’t spend extra time and trees putting more in the box… The plastics used to wrap most flowers is destined for landfill. Large cardboard boxes are no good either. 70% more energy is required to use raw materials than recycled paper. Using non-recycled materials also generates 73% more air pollution.

Delivery

We deliver using bikes and electric vehicles. We also offset any of other carbon produced in delivery

Flower Care

No plastic sachets and artificial food for your flowers. We tell you how to care for them with a few things you’ll have in the cupboard. We encourage you to re-use your packaging and flowers after your bunch is dead. Check out our blog for creative ideas for your wilting stems.

At  least 8m tonnes of plastics leak into the ocean every year, the equivalent of dumping the contents of one garbage truck every minute into the ocean. At present this adds up to more than 150m tonnes of plastics in the ocean, and by 2050 the weight of plastic is likely to outweigh that of fish.
